WESTERNS UPDATE!

Due to the amount of work involved in producing Westerns, it has become increasingly apparent that all the information on each member of of the fleet, particularly the updated Works information, will not all go in one volume and be cost-effective. So, we are now splitting the work into two volumes - Swindon-built and Crewe-built locomotives. The Swindon built version is looking good for August 1 publication and the Crewe-built volume will be released in October. This way, we can cram more info and colour into the volumes to give you even more value for money. Westerns (Volume One Swindon - below) is only slightly late on deadline and PROOFS are expected back on Monday, July 19 for us to make any last minute changes. We anticipate a week for the printer to casebound the book and print the necessary copies, thereby we hope to have it to you by August 1 - not bad for us! It has been a mammoth effort and we can tell you that it looks absolutely stunning. Thanks for your support and understanding. If you have already ordered Westerns, you will receive Volume One - Swindon. Details of how to order Volume two will be provided once Volume One has been despatched. Volume Two: Crewe-built locomotives will be released in October! Watch this SPACE!

CAST OF GLORY!

Britain's most-published Western Class 52 author, and renowned Western expert, Adrian Curtis, collected his award for the 'Best Western Book Ever Written' following an independent poll on www.westernsonline.com.
Adrian, who has devoted his life to researching the Western Class 52s since they were withdrawn in 1977, was handed his award at the CD&E party in Huntingdon on May 29.
The award was presented to Adrian by Western enthusiast Steve Speck - who was involved with Adrian in the formation and running of the Western Locomotive Association - the FIRST group to preserve a Western locomotive in 1976!
A delighted Adrian said: "It is a great honour to know that my work has been recognised by the hundreds of Western enthusiasts out there. I am especially happy that my book sits alongside Brian Reed's WR Diesel-Hydraulics as the best there is.
"I would like to thank all those people who made it happen, however small their input, this is without doubt a crowning glory for me and something nobody can take away. I hope all the enthusiasts who bought Cast of Thousands, which incidentally, is the only book of mine that was ever reprinted, continue to enjoy it. This is a great honour from an independent poll and one I shall treasure.
"It also goes to show, that although not on the main line yet, the work we put in, initially, to preserve D1062 has been worthwhile. The WLA have the heritage when it comes to preserving a Western and as being on the initial committee, it will always have a special place in my heart. The WLA must be applauded for their efforts since the 1970s and I urge everyone to become a member and support them. Hopefully, Courier or Ranger may well be on the main line one day. My own membership fee plus donation is already in the post."
Cast of Thousands has been critically acclaimed since its release in 2002 and now sells for up to £40 on Ebay. Adrian is now working on two more books which showcase COT in an up-to-date fashion.
He added: "'Westerns' is a book that will blow people's socks off and 'Tracks of My Years' will be a real surprise to people. After that who knows? My work has now been recognised by my peers and for that I am absolutely delighted. After all, who else has done anything remotely near it...nobody! Enough said. This is a fantastic award. Thanks to everyone who voted."
Other winners were Roger Geach for this 'Westerns In Colour' book. Roger was unable to collect his award in person but we hope to have pictures of him receiving it shortly. Roger is currently in the process of producing a new book for Book Law Publications and we wish him all the best.
In the Hydraulic book category the best photo book award went to Hugh Dady for his WR Diesel-Hydraulics tome and the best written hydraulic book was won by Brian Reed for his WR Diesel-Hydraulics, which, although out of date now, remains a classic of its time.
